You don't need to know a shit to understand a simple thing that mass bombing, sea block and new battle-front in Abkhazia (which is outside the are of South-Osetia) is nothing else but aggression - and this is the point ! The Baltic states could establish a joint air force and put it on the military airfield in Gotland rented from Sweden. The Swedes feel it is too expensive for them to run it and in their shortsightedness they feel they do not need it at all. To interest Sweden in the deal the Balts could agree on purchasing/renting Jas-39 Gripen.

I think, all three Baltic countries should plan their military capabilities together, like 1 country, in order to save money and share resonsibilities. Next question is about cooperation with Nordics, within or without EU context.

A battalion on Marines based near Aluksne and Daugavpils would be nice. I hope Latvia has procedures to demolish bridges, roads and railways in case of conflict. Abrene is a railway and highway hub that was annexed by Russia for the sole reason of being a staging area for an eventual re-occupation of Latvia.

Nobody likes Russians except Russians, and they have earned that respect. Every country and nationality that russia has invaded occupied or repressed suffered heinous acts of barbarism and genocide. Everybody in Eastern Europe knows that and remembers that. It will never happen with the f**kwit that we have for a defense minister (horse guards and swords interest him more than armored vehicles for the troops in Afghanistan), but it is time to start a serious review of Latvia's defense budget and posture. Along with Estonia and Lithuania, we should look into creating a joint procurement program for anti-tank weapons (including helicopters) and look for a creative way to finance at least a couple of squadrons of multi-role (interceptor/bomber) jet aircraft. For what has been spent on the South Bridge in Riga (around 1 billion USD), one could easily put up a strong anti-aircraft defense system as well. One should also consider negotiating to permanent base a multi-purpose (as trainers) tripwire unit of, say, US Rangers or Marines in one of the Baltic countries. If the Russians object, tell them to go to hell and point to Georgia.

Dear Author, I could not really understand Your position. However one is clear- obviously You are antirussian. I spent some time fallowing Your arguments concerning Russia's pre war activities. Of course, Russia has good chances to influence geopolitical situation near Caspian sea, as the US and UN, and even the EU only partly might be associated with true integrity and power. Of course, Russia might be trying to fight its way towards Baku-Tbilisi-Cayhan pipe line, how ever there is also advantage to the US. Georgia did immediate escape from CIS and allowed the US aid accompanied by its military convoy . At this point I must say that even thought some say that Russia prepared for this conflict in military way and also by adopting civilians from Abkhazia and South Ossetia as citizens of RF.. Georgia was the state that attacked first thus awaking chain of antirussian and prowestern actions. It just feels that situation was now or never- Russians in peaceful and strategic way tried to develop prorussian relations with those two regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia (by giving citizen ship, financing nd lobbying), but now after Georgian president's order of attack Georgia has moved towards the West even thought it increased distance to NATO. Now when media has made Georgia to look like a state that suffers from Russian occupation there is military and financial support from West and particularly the US (just like second Turkey- practicaly western state standing outside allance (not the Eu, but NATO this time)). Such situation is more than good for the US's geopolitical strategy in region.

I think it was evident that Russia has planned war long time ago, even without military knowledge. What the question about intellingence still remains - why they didn't warn about so large army near the borders?

I agree with author it is well planned action from Russian side. I'm well educated on military mechanized troops. I know exactly mechanized military troops preparing mechanized operation. And my experience says that it is impossible to prepare so large amount of mechanized units within so short time. It looks like that all military troops were sitting by a Russian/Osetia border a waiting for incidents in South Osetia. They were waiting!

I think because they didn't count that Russia will immediately open the second front in Abhazia and start air-bombing and sea-block. I red the article and the author tells himself that in fact russians used "grad" to push out georgians from Chinvali, however they did not succeed and georgians left themselves just after receiving order to leave. I guess georgians understood that they can't cope the general war with Russia, so the main thing they did - they in fact preserved their army mostly undamaged by concentrating everything around Tbilisi. Even if they would blow-up the tunnel in case of complete war with Russia all they could hope for was international support
