What the Demise of RFE/RL's 'Newsline' Means

Varbūt vispirms vajadzētu izlasīt valsts valodas likumu un tikai tad sākt rakstīt nezinošus tekstiņus interneta portālā. Tas ir viens. Un otrs, vajag mācīties valodas, cienītais -- tas tikai stiprina.

Analytical judgement - i.e. the ability to discern a broad pattern within a multitude of strands, has, helas, become a rare quality. And not only in the case mentioned in this blog. The call-in vote on the popular TV discussion show "Kas notiek Latvija?" last night, where an overwhelming number of the callers declared that Latvia does not need a new library because libraries as such are not needed in this technological era, only goes to show that the vast majority of the Latvian (and not only) populace haven't a clue that information does not necessarily lead to knowledge, let alone wisdom. I am saddened to see that the newspaper "Diena" is assiduously following this trend, its new website being a clear case of information overload + American type happy talk mixed with a good dose of UK yellow journalism. I, for one, find it very revealing that Op-Ed contributors no longer appear on the "Diena" website (only "Diena" bloggers and journalists), but movie schedules figure prominently on the home page. This does not augur well for Latvian democracy nor for democracy tout court....
